CMH Welcomes Family and Friends

At Columbia Memorial Hospital (CMH), we recognize the important role family and friends play in a patients’ healing process, and therefore, have open visiting hours, unless a patient’s condition prevents them from having visitors. unless the patient’s condition prevents it. While in the hospital, we ask that you speak quietly, silence electronic devices, and avoid unnecessary noise.

When planning a visit, please consider the patient’s need for privacy and rest, as well as their medical care needs. With those things in mind, we welcome visitors 24 hours a day. Please do not visit patients if you are sick with a cold, flu or other conditions that may be contagious.

General Visitor Guidelines

  • CMH facilities are 100% Tobacco Free. Smoking or the use of tobacco products is not permitted.
  • CMH strives to maintain a working environment free from violence and intimidation. All weapons are prohibited in all CMH facilities, either owned or leased properties. (The only exception is for authorized law enforcement officers.)
  • When necessary to protect the patient’s health and need to rest, the physician or nurse may limit the number and frequency of visitors a patient receives.
  • If you have a contagious illness, please postpone your visit until you are well.
  • When possible, the patient has the right to participate in the decision regarding visitors.
  • Visitors may be asked to leave the patient’s room for brief periods as needed to provide privacy for patient care, patient confidentiality and/or patient rest.
  • If you are visiting between the hours of 6pm and 6am, please enter the hospital through the Emergency Department.
  • As a Planetree-Designated Patient-Centered Hospital, we fully support and promote a patient-centered healing environment. While in the hospital, please silence your electronic devices, speak quietly, and avoid making unnecessary noise.

Critical Care Unit Visitor Guidelines

To accommodate the special needs of critical care patients and their families, our Critical Care Unit (CCU) is also open for visitors 24 hours a day. Visitors may be limited to two people at a time and should be family or a significant other.

Before visiting a CCU patient, please ask the nurse and patient what time is best for visiting. You may call the CCU at 503-338-7584. All decisions regarding the number of visitors and length of visits will be at the discretion of the patient and the patient’s nurse. Allowances will be made for the special needs of children and adolescents.

Because CCU patients often are at greater risk of infection:

  • Visitors will be instructed and encouraged to wash their hands before and after patient contact.
  • Visitors will be supplied with personal protective equipment as deemed necessary.
  • Visitors will be allowed in the patient’s room and the hallway. All other areas of the CCU are restricted.

CarePartner Program

We encourage all patients to identify one person as their “CarePartner”. The CarePartner will be given a nametag to wear while at the hospital. The CarePartner’s role is to:

  1. Act as a family spokesperson to inform others.
  2. Offer physical and emotional comfort to the patient. (Ask about comfort items available.)
  3. Be informed about and learn skills to help the patient’s transition to home.
  4. Serve as patient’s second set of eyes and ears when talking with CMH caregivers and physicians.

Pet Visitors

CMH recognizes that our four-legged friends offer many emotional and physical comforts, particularly in times of stress. Certified pet therapy and service animals are permitted at the hospital. If you would like to have your own dog or cat visit you in the hospital, please talk to your nurse.

In all cases, pets must be current on their vaccinations, in good health, and under control of their handler at all times.
