Preparing For Your Stay

Be Prepared, When Possible

It’s not always possible to anticipate being hospitalized; however, when you are awaiting the arrival of a new baby or planning a surgery, some forethought will help to ease your mind and make your time in the hospital more relaxed.

Be Clear on Your Billing and Insurance

We understand that worries or questions about paying for medical care can add to what may already be a stressful time. Our compassionate financial counselors are here to help you navigate the often confusing world of medical bills, insurance coverage, and financial assistance.

The CMH Patient Financial Services office is open to help you from 7:30am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday. Our financial counselors can help you with:

  • Questions about bills from CMH
  • Price estimates and consulting prior to scheduled services
  • Payment arrangements and other financing options
  • Financial assistance programs
  • Signing up for the Oregon Health Plan (OHP)

Call 503-338-7530 or 1-800-962-2407 to speak with a financial counselor.

Choose a CarePartner

We encourage all patients to identify one person as their “CarePartner”. The CarePartner will be given a name tag to wear while at the hospital. The CarePartner’s role is to:

  1. Act as a family spokesperson to inform others.
  2. Offer physical and emotional comfort to the patient. (Ask about comfort items available.)
  3. Be informed about and learn skills to help the patient’s transition to home.
  4. Serve as patient’s second set of eyes and ears when talking with CMH caregivers and physicians.

Medications

Please complete the Medication Information Form and bring it with you to the hospital. If you take any routine heart or blood pressure pills, please take your morning medication with just a sip of water before coming to the hospital or as specifically ordered by your physician.

Pack Your Bag

Many comfort items are available to you while you’re at CMH, and we also encourage you to bring some things with you to help you feel more at home. Items you may want to pack:

  • All necessary paperwork, including your identification
  • Personal toiletries, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, etc.
  • Bathrobe, pajamas, socks or slippers
  • Glasses, dentures, hearing aids or other assistive devices you may need. Please label these items with your name.
  • Medications such as insulin and inhalers
  • A book or magazine
  • Some pocket money or a debit card
  • A change of comfortable clothes

Please leave at home:

  • Makeup
  • Jewelry and other valuables
  • Large amounts of cash
  • Hair dryers and electric shavers
  • Tobacco products

Bathing

Prior to your admission, please take a bath or shower using any type of cleansing soap. If you will be having surgery, please DO NOT shave your surgical area.

Plan to Quit Tobacco

CMH is a totally tobacco-free campus. Patients are strongly encouraged to use nicotine-replacement therapies while at CMH. Using tobacco can slow down the healing process following surgery. For help quitting tobacco while you’re at the hospital, call our tobacco cessation coordinator at 503-338-7564 for more information or ask your surgeon or nurse for nicotine-replacement therapy.
