The 5-2-1-0 model was created to guide children, adults and families in living a healthy lifestyle. Each number represents a goal for improving eating habits, screen time and physical activities for better living.
The 5-2-1-0 model is proven for kids and recommended for adults as a guide for healthy living. With these simple steps, living a healthier lifestyle can become easier to manage. The number five stands for eating five servings of fruits and vegetables on most days. Two represents a limit on how many hours of screen time one should have. One is the one hour recommended for daily physical activity. Lastly, the zero is the limit on sugar-sweetened drinks.
5: fruits and vegetables (or more!)
Eat at least five or more fruits and vegetables daily. When making meals, be sure to include some fruits and vegetables to help make the meal more enjoyable and healthy.
2: hours or less of recreational screen time
Limit your recreational screen time to two hours a day or less. Tracking your screen time with a daily log can help you focus on this goal. Simply write down how long you were on the computer, watching TV or using an electronic device. Monitoring your time will help you keep track of your screen time and will play a part in reaching your goal.
1: hour of physical activity
Get at least one hour of physical activity every day for better overall health. Staying physically active does so much for your body. You will feel much happier and healthier through physical movement and activities. Ideas for an hour of movement include taking walks periodically, playing a sport or doing an activity that requires motion. So, get up and get moving!
0: sugary drinks
As sweet as they may sound, sugary drinks can negatively affect your health, which means that cutting them out of your diet creates a great change for your body. On occasion, it’s OK to have a sweet drink, but consuming them daily is not good for you. So the next time you’re thirsty, grab a bottle of water instead of a can of soda.
The 5-2-1-0 model is a great guide to living a healthy lifestyle. Aiming to eat more fruits and vegetables, have less screen time, exercise daily and ditch sugary drinks will benefit anyone and is recommended for both kids and adults.
