CMH Lactation Services recognized for excellence

New mom Amanda Harlacker made an appointment with CMH Lactation Services when she was having difficulties breastfeeding. “They instilled confidence in me as a first-time mom and had such encouraging attitudes even when I was unsure of what I was doing,” Harlacker says. “I would absolutely suggest all new mothers take advantage of this awesome resource.”

Program wins fifth consecutive two-year IBCLC Care Award

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and International Lactation Consultant Association have recognized CMH Lactation Services for excellence in lactation care. The IBCLC Care Award honors facilities and agencies that hire currently certified IBCLC lactation consultants and have a dedicated lactation support program available at least five days a week.

Especially for first-time moms, breastfeeding can pose a challenge. CMH Lactation Services can help any breastfeeding mother, regardless of whether she delivered at CMH. The two lactation consultants, Kelsey Betts and Brooke Duncan, have safe appointments available, with COVID precautions in place to keep moms and babies safe.

“Even though breastfeeding is a biological norm for a baby, it is actually a learned behavior by a mom,” Betts says. “Many can have a hard time in the beginning.”

Duncan and Betts support moms in their decisions with breastfeeding and aim to reach whatever goal they desire. Breastfeeding support is available when moms are experiencing:

  • Engorgement issues
  • Sore nipples
  • Mastitis
  • Feelings of frustration/discouragement

And when babies are facing:

  • Loss of 10% or more of birth weight
  • Jaundice
  • Sucking difficulties
  • Cleft lip/palate
  • Recommendation for formula supplementation

The CMH lactation consultants can also help with other breastfeeding issues. Call Lactation Services at 503-338-7581 to make an appointment.

Masks continue to be required at CMH for patients, caregivers, and visitors.Learn More
